About Dona Dowlan

Dona Dowlan is a serial entrepreneur with over 40 years of experience building businesses, from startups to her current company in surface modification technology based in Tyrone, Pennsylvania. As the volunteer coordinator for Boonerang, a major music festival in western North Carolina that draws nearly 10,000 attendees and closes down the town for a weekend, Dona grew frustrated with the lack of tools that could effectively coordinate volunteers, staff, event logistics, and real-time communication between the field and HQ.

The Stakes: Trapped by “Anyone Can Build” Promises

Dona’s journey into app development began with an accelerator course through Ambitious Labs, where she learned to build apps in FlutterFlow. Wanting to visualize her ideas faster, she jumped into Replit, drawn by the promise that “anyone can build.”

The reality was a slow-motion disaster. She got her complex event management app 90% complete in Replit, then everything crashed. Suddenly, she was trapped. Bills of $50 were arriving twice a day while she struggled to finish, at the same time her learning expanded to the point of understanding the app would not scale to the user base she expected. The database structure made it nearly impossible to export her work. After investing approximately $3,000 in Replit alone, Dona faced a choice: abandon months of work or pay even more to escape.

She chose to fight—hiring a developer at $200/hour to evaluate the app, extract her data, and provide the missing training that would allow her to continue her work at a professional level; adding another $6,000 to her journey. Courtney Hamp of Opichi provided outstanding support but there were core aspects to the build that were just too twisty to fix, like a single, 12K line routes file! So key systems like Stripe and the agents ability to troubleshoot such a massive routes file did not work correctly.

“It’s the proverbial slow boil of the frog. My costs increased gradually over a period of 9 months. I’m on the other side of it now but I’m experienced enough to know that a dog whistle like ‘anyone can build’ will deeply resonate with a percentage of people who are increasingly vulnerable. They may be trying to fight for that elusive dream of owning—‘I need a better way, I just lost my job because of AI’—they will throw everything they’ve got at their idea. All the marketing messages say you can do it. The problem is those invoices will come flying in and many people will not be able to absorb that kind of unexpected financial investment. Anyone who wants to build should start with a solid plan and proceed with caution. If you want a personal or internal tool for your company you can likely do that with some of the no-code platforms. If you do not have coding skills and want a scalable, production ready app for generating revenue, you will absolutely need the help of a developer.”

The Turning Point: An Escape Hatch That Works

On December 16th, Dona faced a decision. She could keep struggling with the partially-rescued code from Replit—or start completely over in Kilo Code. A conversation about adding a team checklist feature made it clear: she needed to rebuild, and she needed a platform that wouldn’t trap her again.

Courtney Hamp of Opichi recommended Kilo Code and she was immediately drawn to our philosophy. Unlike platforms that lock users in with proprietary databases and opaque systems, Kilo Code treats their VS Code extension & App Builder as a starting point—not a cage. Users can begin building without being professional coders, then seamlessly export their code to work on it themselves or with a developer.

“It became an imperative to just get all of my hard work out of Replit. That was the mission: get it out, while I had no idea what I was doing. None. I found the developer who helped me on youtube. He oversaw the entire extraction, but I was still faced with the decision to either keep struggling with the current mess that was now out of Replit, or start completely over in Kilo Code. And that’s what I did.”

The Transformation: Two Weeks to Rebuild Everything

What happened next surprised even Dona. In just two weeks—over a “gruesome, miserable lead-up to Christmas”—she rebuilt her entire event management application from scratch in Kilo Code. The app she’d spent months struggling with in Flutter Flow and Replit was recreated in a fraction of the time.

The new version wasn’t just a copy—it was better. She added features she’d been unable to implement before, including the team checklist that sparked the rebuild. The full CRM, automations, and marketing capabilities were all ready.

Working with Jude Nwafor, a software engineer from Nigeria she met through Codementor, Dona found she could now collaborate effectively. She upgraded to Kilo Code’s Teams plan, inviting him to work directly in the same environment—something impossible with her previous platform’s architecture.

“I rebuilt the entire app in Kilo Code in two weeks. It was the most gruesome, miserable lead up to Christmas that you could imagine. Luckily, I happen to love the work. Now, I’m on a journey with Jude as an essential building partner, who has the skills to stabilize after I visualize.”

The Victory: Apps That Improve Physical Life

Dona’s event management app is now in final polish ahead of her town’s fifth annual music festival this June. But her mission extends beyond one app. Having experienced firsthand the predatory practices of platforms that promise freedom and deliver lock-in, she’s committed to building tools with a different foundation.

“At Admin Collective, LLC our vision is to build apps & educational materials that improve the users’ physical life. We don’t optimize for engagement, habit loops, or recurring charges that outlive their value.”

– Dona Dowlan

For Dona, Kilo Code isn’t just a tool—it’s a partner that shares her values. A platform that lets her build complex, production-ready applications without the fear of waking up trapped in a system designed to extract maximum value from her work.

The $15,000 she spent learning hard lessons about no-code platforms wasn’t wasted. It taught her what to look for: true code ownership, transparent pricing, and the freedom to grow without permission.
